Dog Training Collars - Do They Work?

Training your dog can be a fun and rewarding experience. Not only will you have a ‘good’, trained pet, but you will form a bond between you and your dog that cannot be broken. An untrained dog is not really domesticated. It’s essentially still wild, or wild in some aspects. Therefore, every dog owner should attempt to train their pet to act appropriately. The dog doesn’t have to be a circus animal and doesn’t have to jump through flaming hoops or balance on its hind legs; but a dog should learn basic commands such as sit and stay. A dog should learn not to run outside of the yard, it should learn not to beg at the dinner table, it should learn to stay off the nice furniture and it should learn that excessive barking is unacceptable. Training your dog is not easy, however. If you’ve attempted to train your dog and you’ve given up after a few minutes, you’re not alone. Many people find it downright impossible to train their dog. Sometimes it’s the dog. Some dogs are problem dogs, they are very temperamental and this makes training almost impossible. However, most of the time it’s not the dog that’s the problem; it’s the trainer. Most people just don’t have the patience or the know how to train a dog properly. In order to train a dog properly you must convey what you want and you must remain consistent. If you have problems training your dog, chances are you will succeed with a dog training collar.

Training Collars

What are training collars and do they work? That’s the question most people ask whenever posed with the possibility of using one of these training aids. Dog training collars are worn by your dog just like a normal collar. Then, depending on which type of collar you have, it will train your dog to behave as you want. There are three types of dog training collars. There’s the shock collar, the spray bark collar and the sonic bark collar. All three types work equally as well. The idea is to administer a message to the dog that certain behaviors are unacceptable.

One of the most common reasons trainers use dog training collars is to curb excessive barking. The shock collar administers a small static electrical charge whenever the dog barks. The spray collar sprays a mist of citronella towards the dog’s snout whenever the dog barks; and the sonic collar administers an ultra sonic sound whenever the dog barks. Each of these sensations is unpleasant to the dog and soon the animal associates the feeling or sound or smell with barking and the behavior stops. However, not all dog training collars are designed to stop barking. There are also barrier collars as well as remote collars. Barrier collars respond to strategically placed electronic barriers that will administer a shock whenever the dog leaves the barrier, or most commonly the yard. The remote collars can be used by trainers to curb problem behaviors by remote control from a distance. That means even though the system of administering the message is different, the basic message sent to the dog is the same and so the dog soon learns to curb its problem behavior no matter what type of collar you’ve chosen.

So, yes, the dog training collars work. However, not every collar will work with every type of dog and some trainers have their preferences. You should choose the collar based on the type of dog you have as well as the behavior you’re trying to stop.

Which Collar?

So which collar should you choose? Most dog trainers have their preferences, but usually the trainer with a problem dog will start with the sonic dog training collar. If the dog doesn’t respond to the dog training collar, then the spray collar will usually follow. Finally, if the dog doesn’t respond to either the sonic or spray collar, the shock collar is typically used as a last resort. Most would assume, then, that the shock collar is somehow harsh or cruel for the dog. That’s not the case. Each type of collar is extremely safe for the dog and they’ve been tested to ensure this is the case. To find out which collar you should use, take into consideration the type of dog you have, the size, weight as well as temperament of your dog. Then, conduct your own research. If you can, try to find online reviews of people who have used dog training collars to successfully train the type and size of dog you have. It may take some trial and error but you’ll soon find a dog training collar that works for your dog.

Dog training collars can be used to successfully train your dog; no matter what you’re trying to train your dog to do. They’re not just used for barking. You can use dog training collars to teach your dog basic obedience, to teach it tricks, to keep it inside of your yard and, as discussed, to stop excessive barking. Just make sure you get the right type of dog training collar for your type of dog, make sure you remain consistent and make sure you reward your dog when it finally responds to the training efforts.
