Is An Invisible Dog Fence Worth It?

Invisible dog fences may sound like something out of a science fiction movie, but they are real and they’ve helped many dog owners train their dogs to stay in their yards. How many times have you had to chase your dog down the street or across your neighborhood just because it won’t respect its boundaries? Many dogs have zero impulse control and will start running full speed at an animal or other object before you know what’s happening. If your dog gets loose and runs down the street, it could accidentally bite a neighbor, thus leading to a lawsuit; it could get run over or it could even run away. Don’t chase after your dog, get an invisible dog fence. But what is an invisible dog fence and how can it help teach your dog where its boundaries are?

An invisible dog fence is actually just a buried wire around the perimeter of your yard. The dog wears a collar that emits a low frequency electrical charge, not unlike a static electricity charge, whenever the dog goes close to those wires. It works the same way as an electric fence keeps cattle from trying to escape, except there is no actual fence; it’s all invisible. Soon, the dog learns that staying within the yard keeps it from getting ‘shocked’ and it no longer wanders outside those boundaries. No longer will you have to chase after your dog hoping the worst case scenario never happens. You just slip the collar onto your dog’s neck, and you walk away while your dog learns where it can and where it cannot go.

Will It Work For Your Dog?

Many people have apprehensions about using invisible fencing for their dog. Some feel their dog is too temperamental or too big for an invisible dog fence to work. This is nonsense. The trick is to get the right type of invisible dog fence for the type of dog you have. For example, you wouldn’t get invisible dog fencing designed for a small dog for your Great Dane. You must get the right type of invisible dog fence for the size, weight, type and temperament of the dog you have. You can read the back of the packaging which should tell you what size of dog the invisible dog fence is designed for, or you can do your own research. Get online and research the type, size and temperament of dog you have to determine which type of invisible dog fence you should get. There are invisible dog fences out there for every type of dog; you just have to find them. Ask a veterinarian, or a trainer, or just do your own research so that you know you’re getting the right training tool for your beloved pet.

Used Correctly

As with other training methods, you must use your invisible dog fence correctly. It should go without saying but your invisible dog fence should only be placed on the outer limits of your yard. You shouldn’t, for example, use your invisible dog fence to encircle your dog in a small enclosure. It should only be used to mark boundaries and those boundaries should be clearly set. Make sure you keep those boundaries set; don’t move them around or else the dog may become confused. Read the directions to the invisible dog fence thoroughly so that you know you’re using it correctly. Make sure you calibrate the collar correctly so that you’re administering the right amount of charge for the dog you have. A big dog, for instance, will require a little more power than a small poodle or Chihuahua. Also, make sure you read all the specifications of the invisible dog fence so that you’re familiar with all the capabilities in case you need to use them. Training a dog can be tricky but an invisible dog fence should make things easier. You’ll need to use it correctly, however, if you hope to make a dent in your dog’s problem behavior.

Don’t run after your dog. Set boundaries that your dog is not to cross under any circumstances. Sure, you can teach your dog to respect the boundaries by using treat based training, by spending countless hours trying to teach it, or you can just use an invisible fence which sends a crystal clear message to your dog where it’s not allowed to go. For those owners who don’t have a lot of time or patience to train their dogs correctly, or the know how, the invisible dog fence works like a charm. Your dog doesn’t understand what you want and so you need to send a clear message. This is what invisible dog fences do and they work so well many dog owners and lovers choose them for their dogs so that they no longer have to go running after their dog whenever a squirrel comes too close, or a cat, or whatever else the dog runs after on impulse when it goes running down the street and out of its yard.
