What Are Shock Collars Used For?
Shock collars are great dog training tools that help the owner train the dog to behave in a certain manner. They’ve been around for nearly thirty years and since that time they’ve been tested to ensure safety for the animal as well as effectiveness. Shock collars emit a small charge that tells the dog that behavior is bad. The charge is not unlike a shock one gets when they walk across carpet in low humidity. It’s a tiny nuisance to the animal but it’s enough to cause them to behave in a different manner so as to avoid another shock. There are varieties when it comes to shock collars. There are anti-bark collars that are timed to go off whenever the dog starts to bark, there are the invisible dog fence collars that shock the dog whenever it goes past a predetermined boundary, and then there are the dog training collars that work by remote control. With training collars, the owner controls the shock in order to teach the dog to behave in a certain way. The idea behind these collars is to teach the dog that certain behaviors are unacceptable and if the dog behaves in that way, it will get a shock. Soon the dog learns what behaviors don’t elicit a shock and it thus becomes ‘trained’.
Do They Work?
Dog shock collars do work. However, they must be used correctly and consistently. They should not be used to simply punish the animal. They should be used to train the animal and to convey to it that certain behaviors are absolutely unacceptable. Make sure you get the right size of collar for your dog and also make sure you calibrate them correctly. You don’t want to have full power for a small dog just as you wouldn’t want weak power on a large dog. You must also remain consistent. For example, if you are using a shock collar with a remote control, you must only use the shock mechanism for behaviors that are unacceptable. If you shock your dog at all the wrong times, your dog will become confused and it won’t do what you want. You must keep on your dog and teach it the right way and this can only be done through consistency.
Before using dog shock collars, you must first have an idea of what you would like your dog to learn. Are you trying to keep your dog from barking at all the wrong times or all night long? Are you trying to dissuade your dog from jumping up on your nice leather furniture or are you just trying to teach your dog to behave in certain situations? The truth is that dog shock collars can be used for all of these problems and more. You can use dog shock collars to even teach basic obedience. You can teach them to sit or do basic tricks but the dog shock collars work best for problem behaviors, and with problem dogs, that seem to do what they want when they want. Once you have a behavior curriculum in mind, you can use the dog shock collar to mold your dog into a more obedient dog, and thus a better pet.
As an owner of a dog, you want an obedient pet. If the dog chews up all your furniture, messes all over your house and never listens to you, you’re going to become frustrated and that means you’ll soon resent your dog. You should have a great relationship with your dog. After all, dogs are man’s best friend! For you to form a relationship with your dog, your dog must listen to you, must learn to act appropriately and must learn that you, the owner, are the boss. The dog shock collar will create a better relationship between you and your dog because your dog will learn what behaviors are accepted and which ones aren’t; and this can help form a bond between you and your dog that will last for years and years.
Safety
Some people try to claim that dog shock collars are unsafe or even cruel for dogs. The fact is these collars have been tested over the years to ensure safety and comfort. The shock the dog collars administer is merely discomforting for the dog. It’s not like the high powered shocks that most people imagine. If dog shock collars were cruel, they wouldn’t be in such high use by dog trainers and lovers all over the world.
So if you’re trying to teach your dog how to behave and you’re not having much luck, use a dog shock collar and teach your dog the right way to act. Your dog wants to please you but first it must learn how to act, and how not to act. If your dog doesn’t understand what you want, your training efforts will be unsuccessful and both you and your dog will become frustrated. The mild discomfort provided by the dog shock collar will prevent bad behavior so that your dog becomes trained, obedient, a good dog and a good pet.
