Stop Your Dog Barking With a Sonic Collar

Why does a dog bark? A dog barks to communicate with other dogs, to indicate the dog wants something, a dog will often bark out of frustration and the most common reason for a domesticated dog to bark is to warn its owner. How many times has your dog gone off on a barking fit just because someone knocked at the door or even just approached your yard? A dog shouldn’t be discouraged from barking, as it’s a natural instinct deeply ingrained in the dog’s genes. However, incessant barking is annoying and it can often lead to the owner resenting the dog or, worse, it can create a problem with neighbors and even the police if noise ordinances are broken.

If your dog has a problem with constant barking, there are many things you can do to stop this. One of the most popular ways is with a sonic collar, also called a sonic bark collar or ultrasonic bark collar. A sonic collar is worn by the dog just like a regular collar. When the dog begins to bark, the collar activates an ultrasonic sound that only the dog can hear. This irritates the dog so much that the barking stops. Soon, the dog will associate its barking with the sound of the collar and the barking will stop since the dog won’t want to hear that noise again. The collar doesn’t have to be worn forever. It only has to be worn until the dog gets the message that excessive barking is inappropriate and unacceptable and this trains the dog to be more quiet in certain situations.

The main use of a sonic collar is to curb barking behavior. There are other collars out there that are used for a myriad of purposes such as simple obedience training, keeping a dog within certain boundaries and even from keeping a dog from digging. However, sonic collars are only used for bark control. If your dog has other problems besides just excessive barking, other options will have to be exercised as the sonic collar will not help with those. The sonic collar only activates when the dog begins to bark.

Completely Safe

Some people may wonder if sonic collars are safe to use on their dogs. Will they damage the dog’s eardrums? Will they cause eventual hearing loss? The answer to each of these questions is no. Sonic collars have been used for years to help curb dog barking and they’ve been tested and retested to ensure safety. They’re used just like a dog whistle. A dog whistle can only be heard by a dog and for many years they’ve been used to train dogs to obey various commands. Just like the dog whistle, the sonic collar emits a high pitched sound only momentarily. It’s enough to annoy the dog but not enough to damage the dog’s hearing. If the collars were damaging, dog trainers wouldn’t use them so frequently. The fact is trainers do use them because they work at helping to stop the incessant barking dogs sometimes do when they aren’t trained properly.

Other Collars vs. Sonic Collars

How do sonic collars stack up against the other types of training collars? The other types of training collars include shock collars and spray collars. Shock collars give the dog a tiny static shock, not unlike the shock you get when you sometimes grab the freezer door in the frozen section of your local grocery store. It’s not harmful to the dog, it’s just annoying; exactly like the sonic collar. Both the sonic collar and the shock collar help a dog stop barking. Although shock collars are more effective as anti bark collars, the sonic collar works on every dog as every dog is able to hear the sound emitted by the collars and it’s annoying to every type of dog; which is important if you hope to stop your dog’s constant barking.

Spray collars also activate when your dog begins to bark. The collar shoots a mist of citronella across the dog’s snout. The scent, the sound and the feeling of the citronella are not pleasant to the dog and thus the collar works in curbing excessive barking. Just like the sonic collar, the spray collar works on all types and sizes of dogs. However, some people don’t like the idea of a mist of citronella constantly being sprayed all over their house. And the dog, once sprayed, will sometimes try to wipe it off on the carpet or on the nearest piece of leather furniture. With the sonic collar, there is no mess, nothing to wipe off, and the sonic collar works just as well to help stop that constant barking that you hate so much.

Your dog is going to bark; that’s a given. However, if your dog barks constantly and you’d like to stop it, a sonic collar is a great choice in helping you stop this annoying behavior. Your dog will soon learn that the barking brings on that horrible noise, no matter how short the noise is; and this will help your dog become more accommodated to not barking. This makes for a great training tool and it will turn your dog into the good domesticated pet you’ve always hoped for.
