Spray Collars To Stop Your Dog Barking

If you have a dog that won’t stop barking, there is a solution. Spray bark collars have been used by many dog owners to successfully train their dogs to stop barking at the wrong times. It’s normal for a dog to bark but when the barking is incessant, the owner must put a stop to it. The dog must learn that it’s only ok to bark in certain situations and not all the time. Spray collars accomplish this by teaching the dog not to bark.

Spray collars work by spraying a citronella solution towards your dog’s snout the moment the dog begins to bark. Commonly called spray collars, they’re also called spray bark collars, citronella bark collars and citronella anti bark collars. Dogs don’t like the feeling, the smell or the sound of the citronella mist. The dog will soon associate the citronella with the barking and the barking will eventually stop.

There are other ‘training’ collars on the market, such as the shock collar and the sonic collar, but the spray collar is used primarily for barking control. This isn’t the case with the other collars that can be used to curb other behaviors or even to teach basic obedience. Barking is an issue with many dog owners, especially if they live in close proximity to others such as in an apartment. When the dog barks all night, neighbors complain and sometimes the police are even called because of noise ordinances. You can’t usually make a dog start barking because it’s such a natural instinct for a dog. Tell it to stop, and the dog doesn’t really know what you want or why. With a spray collar, you don’t have to say a thing. The spray collar works by itself to teach the dog to stop barking. It doesn’t need to be worn forever; only as long as it takes for the dog to learn the proper behavior.

Are They Safe?

Citronella dog spray collars are extremely safe for dogs. The citronella spray is completely non-toxic and only acts as a nuisance to the dog. Imagine if you had someone come up to you and spray a scented spray in your face every time you did something. You’d probably stop that behavior to prevent the person spraying you again. That’s exactly how the spray collars work. It’s completely safe. Plus, they’ve been used by countless dog owners, trainers and lovers for years to train dogs not to bark at inappropriate times.

Other Collars vs. Spray Collars

There are three types of collars that are typically used in training dogs, as we’ve already discussed. There are the shock collars, the sonic collars and the spray collars. How do the shock and sonic collars compare to the spray collars for keeping a dog from barking?

First, let’s look at the shock collar. A shock collar emits a small electrical charge, not unlike the shock you get when you drag your feet across dry carpet. It’s not harmful to the dog, it’s also only a nuisance like the spray collar, but it does teach the dog what not to do. The shock collar, however, needs to be calibrated to the size of dog and may not be as effective as spray collars that work on any type or size of dog. Plus, some people have a problem with shocking their dog, no matter how harmless the shock may be. Therefore, many dog owners prefer spray collars over shock collars for teaching their dogs to stop barking.

Sonic collars emit a high frequency sound whenever the dog starts barking, just like the other types of collars. The sound is so high in frequency that only the dog can hear it. It can be timed to go off when the dog barks and it lasts only a moment, only enough for the dog to associate it with the barking. The sound, however, may be troublesome to other dogs as well if they’re in very close proximity. Plus, some dogs may not react to the sound so it may not be as effective as other collars, such as the spray collar.

The fact is the spray collar works on every type of dog big or small. The citronella mist sprayed on the muzzle and nose is extremely annoying to the dog. It’s not harmful to the dog, there’s no shocking, no high pitched noise that can damage ear drums; it’s merely annoying. That’s not to say the other collars are harmful. All three types of collars have been tested to ensure safety. It’s just that some dog owners feel more comfortable using a collar that only sprays a mist instead of using the other types they don’t feel that good about. Therefore, if you’re a dog lover and you want to teach your dog to quit barking, try a spray collar to assist with your training efforts. Your dog will soon get the hint that excessive barking is not acceptable. Then, when the dog finally learns, you can take the spray collar off and hopefully you’ll never have to use it again.
