However, something to consider when purchasing these training collars: Our dobe is just 2yrs old and still really a big pup. We have been with out the transmitter for 2mths, yet, recently she has started to slip when highly stimulated by changes in her environment i.e, roo cutting across our path. The good thing is thus far she has not bluntly ignored us, however, she is just not as quick to respond. I think that this maybe the Dobe puppy factor as I don't think the Cattle dog, Kelpie or GSP's I know would start to slip back into old habits.
In general I found it important to:
Read up on how to use these remote training collars properly. They work very well when used correctly. As our Dobe is very smart with working us out I found it vital to always put the collar on first and left her be for 15-20min before doing any work with her. This has ensured that she doesn't associate the collar with the training. Further to my top comment it has helped her to maintain her obedience when not wearing the collar....which is the end goal - to not require it.
When looking for a remote training collar I've now learnt to double check that the Brand is a very popular one through out the United States and Australia to help ensure ongoing customer support.
Check that the coverage for the remote training collar suites the intended use and location of the training system. ie, just training in the back yard, off leash at the beach, mustering or pig hunting.
Decide if you require a water proof system or not. The Innotek ADV 1000 had a water proof collar but the transmitter was only splash proof. While we dealt with this fine, I am looking forward to both a waterproof collar and transmitter. I always worried about the transmitter when working in the rain. I would never buy a collar that was not waterproof.
If using the training system regularly check for irritation on the dog. However, I think this maybe more of a problem with short haired dogs. I always washed the dogs neck with soapy water and made sure the collar and its prongs are clean. I also regularly checked that the collar fitted as recommended by the manufacturer while the dog is in work. I also make sure that the correct size prongs are fitted. I found doing this prevents the dogs neck getting irritated. This is a problem that some people have had.
I purchased the SD-1825 over the SD-1225 simply due to versatility, adaptability and the extra range that can be achieved in wooded and hilly environments for the extra $100.00. If I wasn't worried about the extra versatility and was just taking my dog to the park or the beach for general training I think the SD-1225 would be more then adequate.
I don't think you'll be disappointed with purchasing a remote training collar through Ace Dog Supplies.
